What does website design cost in Canada?

Most Canadian small businesses pay between CA$ 1,500 and CA$ 6,000 for a website built by a freelancer or a small studio and CA$ 5,000 to CA$ 12,000 at an agency. Here is where those figures come from, what moves them, and what the same work costs from a studio in India.

The short answer

Website design cost in Canada, by provider.

Freelancer or boutique studio: CA$1,500 to CA$7,000

The range three published Canadian guides agree on for a small business site. Quality varies more here than anywhere else in the market.

Agency: CA$5,000 to CA$12,000

A custom build with project management, testing and a team behind it. Larger agencies quote CA$20,000 and up.

Where most land: CA$3,000 to CA$6,000

Two of the three sources put the realistic middle here, plus CA$50 to CA$200 a month for hosting, maintenance and small changes.

What moves the price

Five things, in the order they matter.

01

How many pages, and how custom

A 5-page template site and a 15-page custom build are different jobs. This is the single biggest lever.

02

Whether anyone researched who actually buys from you

Most quotes skip this. It is the difference between a site that looks good and one that brings enquiries.

03

Ecommerce or booking

Payments, shipping rules and stock turn a website into software, and the price follows.

04

Whether search setup is included

On-page SEO, schema and a Google Business Profile are often quoted separately, or not at all.

05

What happens after launch

Support, hosting and changes are where the monthly figures come from, and where cheap builds get expensive.

The three tiers

Cheap, middle and premium, honestly described.

Under CA$1,000, or a DIY builder

Wix or Squarespace at CA$25 to CA$60 a month, or a very cheap freelancer. Right for testing an idea. No research, no search setup, and you do the work.

Suits: testing whether the idea has legs

CA$1,500 to CA$6,000, freelancer or small studio

Where most small businesses should be looking. You usually deal with the person doing the work. The risk is capacity: one person, and no cover if they disappear.

Suits: an established small business that needs enquiries

CA$5,000 to CA$30,000, agency

A team, a process, and continuity if someone leaves. You pay for the office, the account manager and the people who pitched. Right when the project is genuinely complex.

Suits: complex builds, or a business that needs a supplier not a person

Read the quote properly

What a quote often leaves out.

Two quotes are only comparable once you know what each one excludes. Ask about every line below before you decide.

Where Monarch stands on these. The domain and hosting are in your name from day one, on-page SEO and schema are part of the build, and support runs 45 to 60 days after launch. The page copy is written for you, from the business information you send at kickoff. That information is what starts the clock, and you get a checklist on day one so you know exactly what is needed. Blog posts and product descriptions are a separate content writing service.

Seven questions to ask anyone who quotes you.

Canadian or Indian, local or remote, the same seven questions separate a real studio from a sales process.

Being straight about the Canadian part. A Canadian client has hired Monarch: an Executive Director in Toronto commissioned a nonprofit website and SEO project, verified by Clutch and rated 5.0. The organisation itself is based in India. So this is real cross-border work with a Canadian buyer, and it is not a site built for the Canadian market. If you need someone who knows Canadian buyers first hand, that is a fair reason to hire locally.

No tax is added. The price you see is the price you pay. Payment routes for overseas clients are straightforward and are agreed during the free consultation.

Straight answers

What people ask.

Cost of living and cost of running the business, not cost of the work. There is no office, no sales team and no account manager between you and the person building the site. Cheap Indian shops exist too, and they are cheap for the usual reason.

Indian rupees. The Canadian figures on this page are approximations at a dated rate, so the exact amount depends on the rate and your bank fees on the day you pay. The payment route is agreed during the consultation.

No. The price you see is the price you pay.

India is 9.5 to 12.5 hours ahead of Canada depending on the province and the season, so there is a working overlap at either end of the day. Call times are agreed at the consultation and fixed for the project.

You do. The domain, the hosting and the admin access are in your name from day one. Ask this of anyone you are comparing.

One Canadian client, for an organisation based in India, verified on Clutch. Be sceptical of any overseas studio claiming deep knowledge of your local market without the clients to show for it.
