What does website design cost in the UK?
Most UK small businesses pay between £1,200 and £6,000 for a website, and London agencies quote far more. Here is where those figures come from, what moves them, and what the same work costs from a studio in India.

Website design cost in the UK, by provider.
Freelancer: £1,200 to £3,000
Two of the three sources put a straightforward 4 or 5 page build here. Rates run £25 to £120 an hour, so the same brief can produce very different quotes.
Agency: £2,500 to £10,000
A standard small business site. Regional agencies start around £3,000, London firms quote £8,000 to £30,000 and up.
Where most land: £3,000 to £6,000
And expect hidden costs to add 30 to 50 per cent on top of the quoted price, according to Whito research published in 2026.
Figures from ExpertSure (August 2026), Whito (May 2026, updated 25 September 2026) and Duport (14 June 2026). Links at the end of this page.
Five things, in the order they matter.
How many pages, and how custom
A 5-page brochure and a 15-page custom build are different jobs, and the published ranges reflect exactly that.
Whether anyone researched who actually buys from you
Most quotes skip it. It is the difference between a site that looks good and one that brings enquiries.
Ecommerce or booking
Payments, delivery rules and stock turn a website into software, and UK ecommerce quotes start around £3,000 and rise fast.
Whether search setup is included
On-page SEO and schema are often a separate line, or missing entirely.
What happens after launch
Hosting, maintenance and changes run £50 to £300 a month in the UK.
Cheap, middle and premium, honestly described.
DIY, £240 to £600 a year
Wix or Squarespace with a domain and business email. Right for testing an idea. No research, no search setup, and you do the work.
Suits: testing whether the idea has legs
£1,200 to £6,000, freelancer or small studio
Where most UK small businesses should be looking. You usually deal with the person doing the work. The risk is capacity rather than skill.
Suits: an established small business that needs enquiries
£3,000 to £30,000 and up, agency
A team, a process and continuity. Outside London that starts near £3,000; inside London the same brief is routinely three times more.
Suits: complex builds, or a business that needs a supplier not a person
What a quote often leaves out.
Two quotes are only comparable once you know what each one excludes. Whito puts the hidden extras at 30 to 50 per cent on top of the quoted price.
- Hosting, domain and SSL after year one, and whose name they are in
- Copywriting. Many quotes assume you hand over finished words. Ask who actually writes the pages
- Photography and stock licences
- On-page SEO and schema, often a separate line
- Changes after launch, and what they cost per hour
- Who owns the site, the domain and the admin access
Where Monarch stands on these. The domain and hosting are in your name from day one, on-page SEO and schema are part of the build, and support runs 45 to 60 days after launch. The page copy is written for you, from the business information you send at kickoff. That information is what starts the clock, and you get a checklist on day one so you know exactly what is needed. Blog posts and product descriptions are a separate content writing service.
Seven questions to ask anyone who quotes you.
- Who will actually build this, and will I speak to them?
- What research happens before design starts?
- Is the price fixed, and what would change it?
- Do I own the domain, the hosting and the admin access from day one?
- What is included after launch, and for how long?
- What happens if I want to leave and take the site elsewhere?
- Can I see three sites you built, and read reviews from those clients?

Converted at 1 INR = 0.00787378 GBP, the mid-market rate on 25 September 2026 from xe.com. Invoices are issued in Indian rupees, so the amount you pay depends on the rate and your bank fees on the day.
Being straight about the UK part. Monarch has no UK clients yet. The work so far is in India, with one Canadian client on a Clutch-verified project. If knowing the UK market first hand matters for your project, that is a fair reason to hire locally, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise. What the figures above show is simply what the same scope of work costs from each direction.
No tax is added to the price you see. How VAT applies at your end is a question for your accountant, not for a web designer.
What people ask.
Cost of living and cost of running the business, not cost of the work. There is no office, no sales team and no account manager between you and the person building the site. Cheap Indian shops exist too, and they are cheap for the usual reason.
Not yet. The work so far is in India, plus one Canadian client on a Clutch-verified project. You would be the first in the UK, and the pricing above is the same either way.
Indian rupees. The pound figures here are approximations at a dated rate, so the exact amount depends on the rate and your bank fees on the day you pay. The payment route is agreed during the consultation.
No tax is added to the price you see. How VAT applies on your side is for your accountant to advise.
India is 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of the UK, so most of the working day overlaps. Call times are agreed at the consultation and fixed for the project.
You do. The domain, the hosting and the admin access are in your name from day one. Ask this of anyone you are comparing.
